It's not that they can't, but some people take it really seriously while others don't, and that's when arguments start, and religious arguments don't end well, trust me, I know from experience.

Atheism isn't a religion it's not even a belief it's the belief in nothing so that's not what I mean my point is that if your parents are jewish and you were taught those set of beliefs you are not going to end up catholic or Christian. Your religion is based on what you were taught.
